ay there’s a student, Katie. She is a second-year nursing student who is looking for an internship at a local hospital. She doesn’t have previous experience in her field, and needs to show that she is qualified for the position.
She originally described her experience as:
- Camp Counselor | Camp Minnehaha
- Taught art and craft classes to children and teens
- Led campers in outings to draw from nature
Going through the job description, she noticed a few things that stood out:
- All duties will be performed under the supervision of a registered nurse. Work within the nursing process to provide direct nursing care to assigned patients. Serve as a role model to promote a positive work environment and quality patient care. Ensure adherence to UNM Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignments may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.
Using this information, she put together this new description of her experience:
- Camp Counselor | Camp Minnehaha
- Provided direct instruction on creative projects to campers from various age groups (6-17)
- Served as community role model to provide a positive camp environment and ensure adherence to camp’s policies and procedures.
Even though she didn’t have direct experience with patients, she was able to show that her experiences connect to the work she would be doing in the nursing internship program. Using these keywords also help the ATS software recognize applicants that are a good match for an open position.
