The King County Executive’s Office of Performance, Strategy, and Budget (PSB) is hiring interns to work with several different teams within the office as part of the 2025 PSB Summer Internship Program. Interns will gain a firsthand understanding of the workings of government, get an overview of how projects, policies, and legislation are created and implemented, understand why civic engagement matters, and build an appreciation for the importance of public service. Depending on the assignment, interns may interact with a wide variety of people including staff, elected officials, community members, or program participants. Interns will have the opportunity to be part of a high-performing team and take advantage of County training and learning opportunities. Opportunities to engage as an intern cohort, network and connect with leaders across the organization, and participate in outings to various County operations add to the intern experience at PSB.

The Office of Performance, Strategy and Budget (PSB) is in the Executive department of King County government. It serves as a resource to the County’s departments and agencies in developing and implementing budgets, strategic plans, financial plans, visual management tools, continuous improvement processes, and performance metrics. It is also responsible for regional planning and implementation of Lean process improvement. Criminal Justice Strategy and Policy Intern This internship will be with Criminal Justice Strategy and Policy section of PSB. This section provides strategic direction and project management to support the King County Executive’s goal to re-imagine the criminal justice system, with an emphasis on prevention, diversion, rehabilitation, and harm reduction. Through constant research and exploration, the team partners with community and local government efforts to deliver innovative and effective criminal justice policies. This internship will play a critical role in supporting the criminal justice team’s work with emphasis on data, best practices, holistic safety and expanding communications of the team’s work and impact.
Job Duties
Under supervision, the intern will perform the following duties:
- Research latest findings on special topics in criminal justice and write literature reviews.
- Conduct literature review on evidence-based practices to alternatives to secure detention.
- Assist with the implementation of the communications plan.
- Assist with developing public facing communications.
- Support the team with implementation of holistic school safety.
- Support in coordinating survivor focused efforts
- Coordinate restorative justice efforts
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
- This position is open to undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in public policy, government administration, finance, or climate sciences. Students in other programs with relevant interests and skills are also encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated interest in public policy, health equity and criminal justice or related field
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Attention to detail; and strong project management, organization, and time management skills.
- Experience with research and policy analysis
- Analytical and research skills
- Ability to manage ambiguity and work in a self-directed manor
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse people, organizations and communities
- Ability to apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work and work environment
