Job Title: Watershed Intern (Part-Time, Seasonal)
Location: Cormorant Lakes Watershed District, Minnesota
Hours: 15–25 hours per week (flexible schedule)

Position Overview

The Cormorant Lakes Watershed District is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented individual to support the District’s efforts in protecting and improving local water resources. This part-time position will oversee the District’s permitting system, conduct field and lake inspections, work directly with property owners, and assist with project management and implementation of watershed initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and oversee the District’s permit system, including application review, tracking, and compliance.
  • Conduct field inspections, on-lake inspections, and site visits with property owners.
  • Perform water quality testing, monitoring, and data collection as needed.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to residents, contractors, and stakeholders regarding watershed best practices.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and managing District projects and programs.
  • Prepare reports, maintain records, and communicate findings to the District Board.
  • Attend all District meetings and provide updates on activities.
  • Coordinate and support public education efforts, that may include the creation of pamphlets, newsletters, and online resources.
  • Help plan, promote, and host community events and workshops to engage residents in watershed stewardship.
  • Represent the District at local events, school programs, and partner organization activities.

Qualifications

  • Background in natural resources, environmental science, water resource management, or a related field (education and/or relevant experience).
  • Knowledge of watershed management practices or other related field including work with permitting, and field inspection procedures preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with property owners, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to work independently with good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Proficiency with computers and basic data entry/reporting.
  • 18 years or older.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the District for site visits and inspections. May be required to operate a watercraft on occasion, lifting up to 70 lbs.
  • Carry out other duties typical of watershed staff as assigned.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid position: Combination of field work, office hours at the District office, and remote tasks.
  • Flexible scheduling, averaging 15–25 hours per week; Workload varies
  • Occasional evening may be required for meetings or inspections. Monthly meetings (two a month) are in the evenings located at the Cormorant Community Center in Cormorant, MN.

Compensation

  • Competitive hourly wage based on qualifications and experience. Starting range at $25.00/hour
  • 50/50 premium Paid Family & Medical Leave
