You can utilize your people skills and organizational abilities to help Wilder steward our volunteers and ensure they have the best possible experience. As an intern, you will learn the core competencies of volunteer management and event planning while assisting with a variety of projects to support volunteer recruitment, onboarding, communications, and appreciation efforts. You will also get a front row seat to all aspects of volunteer coordination for Wilder’s annual fundraiser, Ordinary Magic.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with volunteer coordination for Wilder’s Ordinary Magic gala, including writing and sending communications, attending training, supporting onsite check-in, and collecting and providing feedback about the event.
- Support content creation for volunteer recruitment, outreach, and ongoing communications and newsletters, such as writing and sending emails.
- Help update materials in word documents or in our database with new language or to follow current processes.
- Provide volunteer management database assistance, including data entry, clean-up projects, and document uploading as needed.
- Other Volunteer Services or event planning projects as time allows, to be determined based upon the intern’s interests and skills.

- Learn about a nonprofit work environment.
- Learn about Wilder Foundation and our various divisions.
- Network with Wilder’s Advancement team and other staff.
- Increase practical skill with Microsoft Office products and communication abilities.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Current class standing of college sophomore or higher.
- Ability to interact with and assist people of varying backgrounds, cultures and identities, including race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, ability, gender, gender expression, religion, etc.
- Strong written communication abilities and interpersonal skills to talk with volunteers individually or in small groups.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Be proficient in Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
- Comfort learning new databases.
- Highly respectful of confidentiality.
- Ability to work independently on assigned projects and communicate when questions arise.
- Experience working with volunteers or serving as a volunteer is a plus.
- Familiarity with basics of marketing and communications and/or event planning is helpful but not required.
- Complete a background check (Wilder covers the cost).
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work on the computer for a majority of the responsibilities.
- Role may involve frequent sitting or standing while working on a computer.
- May occasionally help carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
Orientation and Training:
- The intern will receive an orientation to the organization and specific training on Volunteer Services projects. Orientation materials are all in English. Content is shared in writing and orally. Ongoing support and supervision will be provided by the Volunteer Services Manager.
About the Environment:
- This role takes place at our office, where there are cubicles to work near other teammates. The space has fluorescent lights and large windows. It is usually a quiet workspace as teammates rotate which days they are in the office. Different staff will be present in the office, but the main contact for the intern will be consistent.
Schedule and Location:
- Estimated dates: Mid to Late January 2025 – May 2024
- Days of the week: Monday-Friday options
- Hours: 10-15 hours per week during daytime business hours of 8am to 5pm with evening hours needed for Ordinary Magic on the evening of Thursday, May 1, 2025
- Site: Hybrid schedule at Wilder Center (451 Lexington Parkway North, St. Paul, MN 55104) and remote
Rate of compensation:
- None; unpaid volunteer position. A $1,000 stipend will be provided to help cover costs incurred, such as transportation.
