The City of Eagan is hiring an Engineering Intern.
Engineering Interns primary duties include providing assistance to engineering personnel with the annual street rehabilitation projects and performing traffic counts. They assist with the inspection and measurement of quantities for the current year’s projects, perform field reviews for the upcoming year’s projects, and collect, compile, and submit traffic count information to Mn/DOT. Secondary duties include assistance with the preparation of feasibility reports, assessment roles, AutoCAD base plans, surveying, and the creation of maps, graphics, and exhibits for street improvement projects. They also provide technical assistance to Engineering personnel, and assist the general public with engineering related questions or problems.

Essential Position Functions
- Actively participate in intern development opportunities hosted by various City departments throughout the term of the internship
- Perform field reviews of the street, curb and gutter, and utilities to prepare for future street rehabilitation projects
- Assist with the inspection and measurement of quantities for various public improvement projects
- Assist with the preparation of feasibility reports and assessment roles, and creation of exhibits, maps, and graphics
- Assist with engineering related field surveys for public improvement projects
- Perform miscellaneous drafting tasks, City map updates, and visual aid presentations
- Assist with maintaining engineering related documents and keeping them accurate and up-to-date
- Assist the general public, engineers, developers, etc. with requests for engineering related information
- Perform traffic counts and traffic studies as directed
- Perform miscellaneous research projects relating to engineering information
- Provides copies of plat maps, topographies, as-builts, etc., as requested by the public or other City department personnel
- Communicate orally and in writing regarding field surveys and inspections
What’s Required for this Internship?
- Currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Construction Management, and/or a Construction Engineering college program
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to work independently and complete work assignments accurately and on time
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other City department personnel
- Ability to perform all essential position functions included under working conditions as described
- Must be able to lift and manually transport field survey and inspection equipment and work in a variety of weather conditions
Things that may help you be successful in this role:
- Completed at least one quarter or equivalent hours in surveying and drafting/engineering graphics
- Currently having attained at least a Junior status at a college or university
- Previous work experience in surveying and/ or engineering-related field
- Desire to gain knowledge and experience relating to all facets of municipal engineering
WORKING CONDITIONS: Office 40% Field 60%
- Position requires ability to work outdoors during adverse weather conditions as directed in temperatures ranging from -10F to 100F
- Position requires the ability to assist on a field survey crew as directed
- Position workload may be such that, during some periods of time, activities will be hectic and stressful, and a variety of different tasks will be performed at a fast pace
HOURS OF WORK: Normal hours of work are from 7:00am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. The position requires occasionally working before 7:00am and/or after 3:30pm. The position requires occasionally working on the weekends, as directed.
