Children’s Dental Services can provide YOU with:
Clinical Experience · Public Health Experience · Research Opportunities
Children’s Dental Services (CDS) is an independent, non-profit agency dedicated to improving the oral health of children from families with low incomes by providing accessible treatment and education in our diverse Duluth community since 1919.
CDS is offering a unique opportunity for individuals who are looking for hands-on experience in public health, who have a desire to work in the dental or medical field, who are interested in researching environmental or legal issues, or who wish to practice their Spanish, Somali, Hmong, or other foreign language. While CDS cannot financially compensate interns, CDS is flexible in working with clinical dental, nursing, public health, law, medicine, and other health and college programs to earn credits for internship service or working with students to fulfill the requirements of any funding source (i.e. scholarships) they may be able to find.
Duties may include:
- Shadowing and observing dental procedures performed in or areas surrounding Duluth.
- Cleaning, sterilizing and assembling instruments, supplies and equipment required for specific dental procedures, and assisting in provision of patient care
- Verifying all forms of dental insurance
- Assisting staff in performing dental screenings in various school-based communities
- Conducting research on health, law, and dental practice issues
- Attending educational and promotional functions such as health fairs and school programs, and drafting follow-up reports
- Greeting patients and families in the clinic, and if bilingual, interpreting/translating
- Participating in CDS’s school-based care program through data entry and assisting with various tasks as needed at schools
- Assisting in day-to-day tasks necessary for running a public health clinic, including projects related to management of charts, billing, data entry, and archival of x-rays and records
- Creating and revising multicultural oral health outreach materials
- Researching grants that CDS is eligible for and drafting initial proposals
