Before the Internship
STEP 1:
Need an Internship?

OR
1) Use the Programs of Study page to see if your major requires an internship and how many credits are required.

2) If required, make sure to check in with your department to see what the requirements are for the type of internship you need to secure.

STEP 1:
Want an Internship?
You may still do an internship for credit if it is not required of your major. You may also do a zero-credit internship through Career Development.

STEP 2:
Search for an Internship
Tips for finding an internship:

-Talk to instructors and your program administration to get ideas for what students may have done in the past.

-Search Handshake  Jobs page for opportunities. Filter for internships and location.

-Talk to Career Development to brainstorm internship ideas and receive guidance. Make an appointment in Handshake. Click Career Center > Appointments

STEP 3:
Secure an internship
Apply for internships according to the internship site requirements (e.g., résumé, cover letter, application, etc.) Career development can help you develop your application materials.

-Use KCVC to find helpful DIY resources for résumé and cover letter

-Use Career Activator to develop your materials using instructional templates

-Make an appointment in Handshake by clicking Career Center > Appointments

STEP 4:
Find a faculty advisor
If your internship is required, your program may or may not have faculty assigned to the advisor role. See the list under faculty role in this category.

If you don’t see your major represented in the list, you are responsible for finding your faculty advisor. You may ask any faculty member in your department to serve as your advisor. They are not required to do so, however, so you may need to ask more than one.

If your internship is zero-credit, you may seek a faculty advisor or Career Development can act as your faculty advisor.

STEP 5:
Fill out the
Learning Contract
You will need to work with your faculty advisor and your site supervisor to fill in the details about your internship, including duties and goals, and obtain signatures from both of them on this form. Helps to identify goals for the internship, outlines assignments, and signs the form to approve. Helps to identify duties and goals for the internship and signs the form.

STEP 6:
Request an Experience
Go to Handshake, click Career Center > Experiences > Request an Experience

Fill in all the fields of the form, and click Submit

STEP 7:
Meet with Career Development to go over all the details
Make an appointment in Handshake before the deadline. Click Career Center > Appointments > Internship Set-up  appointment type.

Make sure to complete all the previous steps before coming to this appointment, otherwise you will need to come back again.

Career Development meets with you to ensure all the paperwork is filled out correctly and answers your questions.

STEP 9:
Register for credits
Career Development emails the registrar to get you registered for the internship credits
During the Internship

Mid-term Review Make an appointment with your site supervisor to go over your review. Make an appointment with your faculty advisor to share review with them. Faculty looks over review, contacts site supervisor, addresses any concerns. Meets with student to discuss progress on goals. Completes the mid-term review using survey sent from Career Development. Meets with student to go over the review. Sends mid-term review survey to site supervisor.
Track hours worked Track hours each week using the Hours Verification form. Send form to internships@stkate.edu. Check in with student to verify hours at the mid-term review. Verify and approve hours reported by intern.
End of Internship

Final evaluation Make an appointment with your site supervisor to go over your review. Make an appointment with your faculty advisor to share evaluation with them. Faculty looks over evaluation, addresses any concerns, and talks about how they met semester goals. Completes final evaluation. Meets with student to go over the final evaluation. Sends final evaluation Qualtrics survey to site supervisor.
Track hours worked Track hours each week using the Hours Verification form. Send form to internships@stkate.edu. Check in with student to verify hours at the final evaluation. Verify and approve hours reported by intern.

For-Credit Internship Option

  • Coordinated between your faculty internship advisor and internship site supervisor
  • Appears as a letter grade on your transcript
  • Charged tuition for credit
  • Designated course is your major designation (e.g., BIOL) and 4602, 4603, or 4604 depending on credit
  • Project oriented and cannot be more than 20% clerical

Zero Credit Internship Option

  • Coordinated between Career Development and your internship site supervisor
  • Graded Pass/Fail, appears on your transcript
  • Not charged tuition, but a $100 fee is required
  • Designated as course #INDI 4600
  • Project oriented and cannot be more than 20% clerical
